Do I Have Metabolic Or Respiratory Issue?

default
Posted on Wed, 5 Jun 2024
Question: I need help understanding my bloodwork results. I%E2%80%99m concerned with the CO2 level, specifically. I had a CMP done yesterday that said my CO2 level was 25 (reference range of lab is 24-29). I had this same blood test done last week and the CO2 level was 22 (reference range 20-29). Years ago, I also had an ABG done and the results were: pH-7.45 (reference range 7.35-7.45) CO2-36 (reference range 35-45) PO2-98 (reference range 80-100) and HCO3-25 (reference 22-26). Someone told me that your TOTAL CO2 level = HCO3 on an ABG.

Does it look like I have a metabolic problem? My other values from the CMP are always within range such as BUN (11), creatinine (0.85), sodium (13.7), potassium (4.1) and chloride (102).

Thank you very much for your help. I am terribly worried that I have a metabolic or respiratory issue from these numbers.

thank you for your reply. Are you concerned with the total CO2 number being at 22 and then at 25? Does this look like a respiratory or metabolic acidosis?

thank you again for your comment.

yes i was more concerned with the level being 22 or the lower end of the reference range. its not right in the middle. in other words. not in the middle of the reference range. also, what about the previous ABG i had years ago? the pH level was 7.45 and the reference says it is 7.35-7.45.

please advise thank you!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Anything within reference range is normal.
It doesn't matter if it is in lower range or upper range, if it is within range, that is good enough.
So all reports are within range, that is why normal.
I Hope Your Query is clear now.
Thank You
