Several years ago a VA DR prescribed Synthroid thyroxin which I took for about 6 months. I stopped because I don't want to use synthetic thyroid. Do I need blood tests to determine how much I need prescribed? Thank you.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to 'Ask A Doctor' service...
I've gone through your query in details...
I can understand your concerns...

Well, yes, any kind of Thyroxine supplements be it NP or Synthroid, are prescription based only...

NP or Naturally desiccated thyroid is still under trial, and its efficacy is a debatable factor over the Synthroid (derived from human thyroxine), and VA won't recommend it yet...The Naturopathic doctors may or may not prescribe it (me being an Allopathic practitioner can't assure you that), so approaching directly could be tried...

I can give you some details of the General/Family physicians in Merritt Island though, whom you can approach and request and see if they could provide with the same...

1, Dr Skyhawk Fadigan, MD
255 Borman Dr
Merritt Island, FL 32953

2. Dr Michele Morrow, DO
1045 N Courtenay Pkwy
Merritt Island, FL 32953
(786) 398-4000

However, considering that you've left Synthroid for several years now, the first step would be to get tested (complete thyroid function test including fT3, fT4, TSH, anti-TPO antibodies and a Thyroid gland ultrasound)...Based on the results, and further clinical findings, the appropriate dose would be determined...

Hope this answers your queries...

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind Regards
