Question: Hello
I hope this qestion will go to infectalogist!
As i travel to XXXXXXX and have risk of Schistosomiasis
The qestion how much % of acute Schistosomiasis develop Katayama syndrome ?
Katayama syndrome mortality is 25 %
Schistosomiasis is important to diagnose and treat early !

Brief Answer:
Often
Detailed Answer:
Dear sir, I have gone through your question and I understand your concerns but katayama syndrome is the acute schistosomiasis and can occur often in early stages of infection.. However I would recommend that you take prophylactic Praziquantel treatment post exposure; a single dose of 40 mg per kg.. I hope you find this helpful

Thank you very much !
As reading too much can make you stress as you dont undestand lot of things - and you misunderstand them !
What is mortality of Katayama syndrome ?
As in some literature it is said
Acute schistosomiasis is associated with a mortality rate of up to 25% in some series.
https://emedicine.medscape.com/article/228392-overview#a7
Acute Schistosomiasis, or Katayama fever,36 can increase the mortality rate by up to 25%
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC0000/
It is no said - is it mortality with treatment or with no treatment !
In literature about Katayama syndrome - it is said
; patients respond well to regimens of praziquantel with
and without steroids.
https://sci-hub.se/10.1016/S1473-3099(07)70053-1
Persons with positive fecal and/or serologic specimens were treated with a single oral dose of praziquantel (40 mg/kg). All symptoms resolved after treatment, and no serious adverse reactions to therapy were reported.
https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/0000.htm
Although schistosomiasis is rarely fatal, it causes long-term morbidity such as anaemia and other complications as mentioned above.

So how it is - Katayama syndrome with appropriate treatment mortality is low ?
And it could be as 25 % high if there is no treatment ?
Than you very much !

Brief Answer:
Mortality rate with no treatment
Detailed Answer:
Dear sir, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns but since developing symptoms can take time post infection to develop and this might lead to a late diagnosis of schistosomiasis.. I would recommend a prophylactic dose of praziquantel post exposure to a possible infection.
Mortality rate is associated with no treatment or late diagnosis..
Steroids are added to relieve symptoms of schistosomiasis and not as a cure..
