Brief Answer:
Information.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

I would recommend using emergency contraception. Although ovulation usually happens about 14 days before the first day of the period (i.e. in the middle of the menstrual month in someone who has a 28-day cycle), it can be unpredictable and accidents can happen.

It is definitely possible to conceive if you are 45 yrs old. Some women at this age ovulate monthly, some ovulate irregularly - either way, it's possible to conceive.

If you think you may be having intercourse again in the near future, consider getting on a regular form of contraception such as the IUD or the Pill, as emergency contraception like Plan B is a high dose of progestin, and that can make the next period/cycle irregular (even though it is working). This can be a stressor - not having the next period come on time.

But this time - it would be a good idea to use Plan-B.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information or clarification.

Brief Answer:
Yes, Plan B is safe in women over 40.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Yes, Plan B is overall safe, although as I mentioned, it is a one time dose of progestin (progesterone is the "hormone of pregnancy"). The main problem is that in some women it will mess with the regularity of periods for 1-2 cycles. But it is safe in women over 40, even when there is high blood pressure, smoking, and cardiovascular risks.

I'm attaching a link to an article about contraception in women over 40. To see it you'll have to copy and paste into your address bar. Table 5 is about women over 40 and progestin-only contraceptives. As you will see from this table, it is regarded as safe.

Hope I have answered your query.
