Do Children With Asperger Syndrome Show Problem In Social Communication?
Question: My grandson is a high functioning aspie. He's 11 years old. He has a high IQ 140, and an unusually large vocabulary. He is social and empathetic but doesn't draw friends easily. He loves to play with others but they don't reciprocate. He is aware of his condition and works at it. Do you think his exceptional intelligence is a help or a hinderance? He does very well at school. His teachers like him and his enthusiasm. He wants friends so much.

He has high IQ with aspergers. In asperger problem is social communication. Children with asperger have little to no empathy, monotonous speech patterns, highly idiosyncratic and intense interests (e.g., tide tables, a specified cartoon character, maps), social isolation as a result of inappropriate social communication, and inflexible thoughts and habit.
They express some interest in people as they get older and may show dramatic improvement as they grow older. As adults, AS children can become well-adapted and even very successful. They do tend to remain socially isolated, egocentric, and idiosyncratic. They often have difficulty working with others and have odd speech; they cannot do small talk and may seem fanatically or obsessively interested in limited topics.
When IQ is high they can succeed in their field of interest (maths, music etc.) exceptionally.
You need not to worry much. His teachers are cooperative that is positive part. As children (his friends) of his age cannot understand his problem they are not going to communicate. But adults can understand him and communicate. That is reality of AS and you have to accept.
