Do Corn, Nuts And Seeds Increase The Risk Of Diverticulitis?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Jul 2015
Question: I am a 47 year old female. I am very healthy and physically active. I have always had IBS with occasional bouts of painful diarrhea usually brought on by stress. A couple of years ago I had a particularly bad episode that caused very bloody stools, vomiting and problems with bowel control for a couple of days. I was on a liquid diet for a week and it took two weeks for me to really be able to leave the house as normal. My doctor suspected food poisoning (just prior I had eaten an egg roll from a restaurant that I actually commented at the time tasted rotten) or diverticulitis. She gave me meds and originally ordered a CT scan but eventually cancelled it. Although I still think I had food poisoning, since the stool sample came back good she had concluded I have diverticulitis. I have since been very careful not to eat corn, nuts and seeds...all of which I really like and regularly ate. I know the research is conflicting on if that is necessary. If I do indeed have diverticulitis, is there a benefit to me avoiding these foods. And if there is do things with small seeds like strawberries, cherry tomatoes and blueberries pose a risk as well? (I know I need to get a CT scan to see for sure, but just assuming my doc is right...should I continue to avoid ALL foods with seeds?) Thanks!

Brief Answer:
No need to avoid seeds. Need a colonoscopy

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through the details you have provided.
I understand your concern.

Regarding avoiding seeds and corn, you are right about the conflicting reports .
There is no evidence that corn or seeds precipitate an acute attack of diverculitis.
I do not advice my patients to avoid eating these foods.Hence I would not ask you to stop eating seeds and corn.

You do need investigations either a CT colography or a colonoscopy. This will help to identify the presence of diverticulitis and find out if there was any other cause of the bleeding other than diverticular disease.

Take hygienic food and cleaner water.

Hope this helps
