Do Daytime Numbness In The Fingers And Hands Indicate Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Question: I frequently wake up in the morning with numbness in the fingers of both hands. It always goes away when I get up, and my arms are hanging down next to my body.. Am never bothered by this during the day, where I am able to perform all movements with hands and arms. What can be done to alleviate this condition and is it anything to be alarmed about? Is this carpal tunnel syndrome?
Brief Answer:
What is your profession?
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.
I am so sorry to hear about this pain. I have reviewed this information fully and yes it sounds like carpal tunnel syndrome. This is common in persons who do repetitive tasks using the hands such as typists. With a splint relieving your symptoms, this is pretty typical.
I will suggest you see a doctor for examination. If the diagnosis is confirmed, measures would be taken to address this. It could need medications only and in worst case scenario, surgery.
I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.

I am an 81 yr old woman. I have never performed any repetItive motions in my work ((I retired many yrs ago) , or in my personal life. I find the diagnosis hard to believe because of this. I have never used my hands in repetitive ways unless eating three times a day is considered the cause. What else can be causing this?
Brief Answer:
Vascular disease could be a cause as well....
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Risk factors make that more common but in no way means without it you can never have the disease. There are many other possible risk factors like low functioning thyroid, excess weigh gain, etc. I will suggest that you try the recommended measures and more so because they are simple and not aggressive. This will further inform us if the condition is responding to our treatment plan to solidify the diagnosis.
Disease of the blood vessel; can also cause this. This will happen when the blood vessel is compressed when sleeping resulting in lower blood flow to this area and cramps.
I hope this helps. Wish you well. Feel free to follow up with me if need be.
