default
Posted on Mon, 20 Feb 2017
Question: Hello,

I have had LPR for 2 years now. I have tried every diet possible to control throat symptoms to no avail. I was wondering if hormones could trigger reflux, and if so what is recommended?

Brief Answer:
Yes hormones can trigger it.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query!
As per your query yes a problem with hormones can cause XXXXXXX Most commonly involved hormones is Thyroxine. It is secreted by thyroid gland. When the thyroid doesn't produce a sufficient amount of hormones, it can cause XXXXXXX dysfunction. This allows stomach contents and digestive juices to enter the esophagus, which may lead to GERD.
Second most common hormone involved is estrogen.
Higher estrogen levels can relax the lower esophageal sphincter and can irritate the stomach and even cause the GERD.
Please consult a endocrinologist.Few investigation like Thyroid function tests and serum estrogen level would be checked to rule out if hormones are involved in your case.

Medications would be started as per the reports.

Thanks.

My TSH is 3.7, which I know is normal in conventional medicine, but is this enough to cause Gerd? Also, I can get my hormones tested and bring them back here, but after a day I think this thread closes. How can I contact you again to ask you about my hormones?

Thank you!Also,

When you said "When the thyroid doesn't produce a sufficient amount of hormones, it can cause XXXXXXX dysfunction"...does that refer to Hypothyroidism? And would 3.7 constitute this?

Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Serum estrogen and progestrone to be checked!

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
TSH 3.7 is normal and your XXXXXXX can't be because of Thyroid.
Yes i meant hypothyodism by that.
Get your Estrogen and Progrestrone level checked up and follow up with reports.
You can send to me a direct query, just google search my name on XXXXXXX care magic and send to me all reports etc,However in case you have any problems doing that you can contact customer care.

I just went to a gynaecologist, and she gave me synthoid 50MCG once per day. So she decided to treat my thyroid. Could this help with Gerd? Or with my throat symptoms in general? She said to try the thyroid medication first and then we will start with estrogen/progesterone therapy after a month of this. What do you think?

Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Follow up details!

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
Please attach a printed copy of thyroid profile test reports as 3.7 is normal TSH and starting you on 50 mcg thyroxine does not make any sense.Kindly consult an endocrinologist.
Secondly therapy with estrogen and progestrone should be started only after checking the level of hormones.
As mentioned by you in your brief history you have just mentioned PPI and H2 blockers intake. How ever gerd can effectively be treated with medicines like domperidome,Levosulpiride and Acotiamide.
Please do attach detalis of treatment tried by you and why do you think that Gerd in your case is because of hormonal disturbance, although hormone levels are almost normal.
I want to go through all your details before giving my advice.

Thanks!
