Do Pain, Swelling, Redness And Heat In The Feet Post Injury Require Medical Attention?
Question: If I have extreme pain, redness, heat and swelling following a foot injury a week ago, with negative broken bone x-ray, do I need to be examined further?
Brief Answer:
Please provide some more information
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Can you tell me who did you hurt your foot? Was it a repetitive movement of just one single movement?
The pain can be sign of a fracture, of a rupture of soft tissues or of pressure caused by the accumulation of fluids of blood. Where is the swelling localized?
Is it getting better or the same during all the week?
what pain medication are you using?
Are you able to bear weight on your foot?
Please give me as much information as possible and I will be happy to give appropriate advise.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

The injury was from a fall, but did have a broken bone in the same foot in November. Followed by Ortho and was told it had healed when seen 2 weeks ago. The pain has remained constant with no improvement. I can bear weight but have been walking only minimally around the house. I spend most of my time in bed. I take hydrocodone 7.5 mg four times a day which is prescribed for back pain. The pain is located mostly on the top of the foot just down from the big toe. The entire foot is swollen. The heat is a new symptom which just started today.
Brief Answer:
Symptoms suggest for a possible fracture.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I think you should continue doing further exams, or the local doctor reviews again the X-ray because the fact that you have such a big pain and the location of it, strongly suggests for a fracture.
Continue taking the medicines you are taking, keep the foot elevated and avoid overusing it.
As soon as you have ruled out for sure a fracture you can start doing the activity as much as you can.
But until then I would first make sure that it doesn't need a treatment with surgery or cast because of a possible fracture.
Hope I have answered your query.
Take care
