Brief Answer:
No.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

The use of steroids (prednisolone, wysolone) and XXXXXXX retard (carbamazepine) would not lead to a side effect of numbness of face.

I hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.

I had actually detailed question. Somehow, it did not reach you..

I have been having Cervical problem since last many years. It was okay earlier, but now it has been bothering in terms of getting spasm close to neck very frequently. MRI reports showed that space close to C6-C7 has narrowed down a bit. Physiotherpay treatment in terms of IFT etc. also did not help much. I have tried taking a variety of Muscle relaxants. But, without much of success.

I maintain a BP of 120-130 / 80 - 90 with medication, Amlogard 5 mg.

As you can make out, I was identified with a presence of small 4mm worm in my left side of the brain a couple of days back and hence have been taking steroids / XXXXXXX Retard. Symptoms of the same were missing Hand Eye coordination a couple of times and then feeling a sense of mild disbalance while driving and walking a couple of times.
I am likely to start use of medicine Zentel from day after tomorrow. Followup with Doctor is after three weeks.

Else, I am quite active and walk about 5 to 6 Kms every day in about 45 minutes.

Right now, the only issue I am facing is numbness in the left side of the face. Besides this after taking medicine in the morning, I feel heaviness in the head.

Can you suggest a detailed answer on this condition?

Brief Answer:
Please upload the brain MRI report.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

The disc disease problem can cause neck pain and pain/numbness in the arm. Initial treatment is with physiotherapy and pregabalin capsules. Those who do not respond, can go for epidural injections. Surgery is reserved for the 10% patients who do not respond to any of the above treatment.

Worm in the brain is often caused by tapeworm infection called as neurocysticercosis. Treatment for that is with antiepileptic medications, steroids and albendazole (zentel) as in your case.

Please upload a copy of the MRI brain report to see, if the facial numbness can be explained by the findings on that.

Best wishes,

Dear Doctor,

I have uploaded MRI brain report (taken about 5 days back) and MRI for Cervical bone which was taken about 2 and a half months back.

I do have following questions. Would truly appreciate, if you could be precise and to the point ?

1. Is getting numbness on the left side of the face expected? How I should get recovered from the same? Today numbness on the left side of the face got converted to mild headache which got resolved with a Disprin and about 15 minutes of lying down?

2. Is it expected to have little bit of increased blood pressure owing to use of all the medicines which I have been having since last few days? Will it get resolved after I stop taking steroids and Zentel?
For how long will I need to take XXXXXXX Retard?

3. Can I continue with my usual walk, exercise routine and my work?

4. Please suggest if there are any other Dos and Don'ts which you can suggest from your wide experience..

5. Have these problems anything to do with Life expectancy?

I would be truly grateful to you to get detailed answer from your side.

Regards!

Brief Answer:
My replies are below.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back. I have noted the findings of MRI cervical spine and brain. My replies are below:

1. Based on the findings of MRI, facial numbness can not be explained. It needs to be examined and additional tests ordered if the numbness persists.

2. Steroids can cause an increase in blood pressure. Yes, the BP rise due to steroid intake would normalize after stopping it. XXXXXXX retard is needed until the worm in the brain is there. The worm takes 3 months to three years to disappear (serial brain scan is needed to show the disappearance of worm in the brain).

3. Yes, you can continue all normal activities.

4. No specific do's and don'ts

5. Life span is not affected.

Best wishes,

Dr Sudhir Kumar MD DM (Neurology)
