Do They Indicate That I Have Chronic Kidney Disease?
Question: I am a 35 y/o male. I am approximately 70” tall and weigh 195 lbs. I exercise with weight lifting often, and take 5 mg of creatine daily. Recent lab work was concerning for high creatinine (1.54) and low eGFR (58).
On urinalysis, trace protein was noted, but shows as within normal range. Mucous threads were also seen. Are mucous threads normal? Do they indicate that I have chronic kidney disease?

Brief Answer:
It is probably temporary
Detailed Answer:
Hi Kjkelly,
It is probably a temporary affection of your kidney function. Mucous threads are insignificant on their own. I would suggest to check your kidney function again in a few weeks where you remember to stay hydrated. Also, try not taking the creatine and see if that helps. Do you take any type of medication incl. over the counter drugs?
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Thank you very much for your response.
I have ceased the creatine supplementation and have reduced the overall intensity of my gym workouts. Further, I’ve become more cognizant of my overall hydration.
As to other medications, I take 40 mg pantoprazole and 40 mg famotidine daily under the direction of my gastroenterologist for GERD.

Brief Answer:
Great
Detailed Answer:
That sounds great. As I mentioned, repeat the kidney function tests in a few weeks. I am sure they will be normal. Please let me know if you have any further questions.
