Do We Need To Worry Since Eye Drops Have Caused Redness ?
Question: Hi,
My spouse has seen an eye specialist mainly for a dry eye condition which was felt on the right eye with blurry vision and also ‘water stains’ seen on the eye.
She was given a treatment plan for the dry eyes together with the steroid FML. The eye drops have caused redness and prominent blood vessels only on the left eye which was not the main dry eye. The effects have persisted about 12 hours after use. Is this normal and can the eye drops continue to be used? I have attached pictures of the redness and prominent vessels in the eye. Also the right eye has now experienced pain for a few seconds after the eye drops Hylo Forte are instilled.
I have sent you the pictures of the eye redness and water stain photo.
Thank you and regards.

Dear Dr. Harshita,
Thank you for the information.
Are there other options that could be suitable for dry eyes? Would there be any medications over the counter that could help for the time being in case there has been an allergic reaction to the benzalkonium chloride?
Could you please explain why FML is effective for dry eye treatment as I have read that benzalkonium chloride disrupts the lipid layer of the tear film and also affects mucus cell production.
Pain and more blurry vision is still being experienced. Are these considered to be serious side effects which require treatment?
Thank you,
Regards.
