Does Atenolol Cause Low Heart Rate?
Question: Olmetec 20 mg and atenolol 25 mg ,was my dosage - stoped because two weeks into a cleansing juice diet ,my blood pressure became excellent 110 over80..
Gradually my blood pressure increased so i went back to atenolol only 50 mg.no olmetec.Everything feels fine my pulse is rather low around 48 bpm.
My question is do i need olmetec if the beta blocker is reducing bp and stoping my palpitations,why take both.
I am fit ,healthy still surfing ,68 years old not overweight,no diabetis in very good general health except for palpitations and high bp.Had the full angiogram nothing found,all good.
One note, 15 years ago i contracted systemic vasculitis granulomotis.,which was treated and i have never suffered a relapse,thank God..Do you think this could have contibuted to blood pressure increase,gradually as the arteries might have been effected.A very complex disease mine was treated with prendisonal 60mg reducing to nil over 3 months.plus a healty diet..ok olmetec or atenolol. ?Thankyou for your time ,regards XXXXXXX XXXX

Olmesartan is a AT1 Antagonist class of Anti hypertensive medicine.
It is the drug of choice in controlling Hypertension.
Betablockers specially Atenonlol is not the drug of choice in treatment of hypertension now,And on top of that unlike Olmesartan; Atenolol is reducing your pulse rate causing Bradycardia.(Ideally pulse should be between 60-100/min).
I would suggest you to stop atenolol rather switch over to Olmesartan(Drug of choice in your case).
For palpitation firstly a 24 hour holter monitoring should be done to rule out the nature of palpitations then they will be treated accordingly,Just treating palpitation without knowing the nature of beats does not make any sense.
Olmetec is much safer then betablockers and should be used.Doses can be increased or decreased as per the response of your body.
It has nothing to do with vasculitis,As age increases aorta and arteries get stiffed causing blood pressure to increase.

Yes Thank you ,and I did reply ,
Yes reverted back to 20mg olmetec,with half 25 mg of Noten,and 20 mg atorvastatlin.
All good ,i was hoping for a drug free outcome ,but i think that is not going to happen as I am not overweight ,no diabetis ,eat a vedg dominated diet and i exercise,So what else can I do,
Without the beta blocker i noticed the missed beats and palpitations returned so i am using that drug again.
I feel fine and no real adverse reactions,so i think it is a case of carry on ,with a positive outlook.
Hopehully I get another 20 years before the used by date sticker goes on.

If you are feeling fine with btablockers then you can start taking them preferably Metoprolol or Carvedilol.
However i would suggest you to go for a holter test to see the nature of palpitations and to treat them accordingly.
