Question: Hi two questions, will azithromycin cure a bartholin cyst? Also I had an std test last week and the results came back negative for gonorrhea and inconclusive for chlamydia. What does that mean as far as the chlamydia test?

Brief Answer:
Infected bartholin cyst requires antibiotics

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,
welcome to HCM

I understand your concern.
In my opinion treatment of bartholin cyst depends on its size and presence of infection.

Like in mild infection where its size is small oral antibiotic course is sufficient.

And in severe infection where its size is big a minor procedure called incision and drainage is done where in pus is removed after giving a small incision and oral antibiotics are also given.

Azithromycin works well in bartholin gland infection.

inconclusive for chlamydia means that the test is not able to detect the presence of clamydia.

Coming to chlamydial infection nucleic acid amplification test will help in ruling out chlamydial infection as this test has high sensitivity.

So dear tell me what tests have done in your case for chlamydial infection.

Hi Dr. Myaka,

I am not sure, I received my results within two days so I would assume it did not need a culture. I was just wondering I had sexual contact several months ago wouldn't that be a positive if there was an infection? Or is it possible I took antibiotics which quelled it and created the inconclusive result? I took Bactrim about a month ago. Or is it possible it is in the early stages of infection? I'm just wondering if it was a lab error or more so the infection is at a minimal state.

Thank you for your quick and helpful reply!

Brief Answer:
NAAT is sensitive for chlamydial infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, l got your information.ln my opinion if you had contacted the infection you would have symptoms within 7 to 14 days .

The symptoms will be
1.Vaginal discharge
2. Pain during urination
3.Increased frequency of urine and
4.Sometimes arthritis, conjunctivitis, hepatitis .

If you have the symptoms you can check with your doctor and ask about NAAT ie.,Nucleic acid amplification test which is highly sensitive for chlamydial infection.

Bacterim is not effective against chlamydia
So there is no chance for test to become false negative.

If you have not experienced any symptoms then you need not worry about infection and just relax.

Its better your partner also get check up done for any sexually transmitted infections.

And practice safe sex practices like condom usage, urination and washing genitals before and after intercourse by both partners.

If the cause of bartholin gland infection is due to chlamydia and it is mild infection then Azithromycin is effective antibiotic.

feel free to ask any further query

Hope this satisfies your query...regards...

Okay, yes I have not had any symptoms since the sexual contact in july and no sexual contact that would lead me to believe that I would be showing any currently. I just wanted to make sure the inconclusive lab result was through either a lab error and not an infection that was treated by bactrim or an infection that was in the early stages. Although from your response it appears the infection would not be in its early stages at this point and would have yielded a positive result.

Second part- can azithromycin be used to treat mild bartholin cysts that are not a result of chlamydia?

Thank you so much this has been incredibly helpful!
