Question: i started taking Bactrim 4 days ago for a prostate infection and today was not feeling well. my wife is a diabetic so she tested my sugar. it was 74 so she made me eat a few things and i felt better. she tested again it was 118. hour and half later i again feel sick and sugar is 67. is the bactrim causing it and should i stop taking until i can see the dr.
Brief Answer:
I wouldn't recommend to stop Bactrim.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking on HCM!
Hypoglycemia is a rare side effect of Bactrim (0.1% of cases) and until now is not very clear if it is caused by Bactrim because it is seen mostly in patients with HIV. So if it is caused from Bactrim or HIV is not verified.
The low blood sugar you reported is not worrisome.
Under 70 mg/ dl is considered hypoglicemia. The values you reported are not significant.
I would recommend to continue the treatment and try to eat often ( every 2-3 hours) and to avoid food with high calorie index.
If the symptoms persist than you should inform your physician.
Hope the information will help.
Kind regards ,
Dr.Mirjeta
