default
Posted on Sat, 17 Jun 2017
Question: Dr Rynne, I am taking Oxycodone for relief of some of the pain of neuropathy stemming from my type II diabetes and the pain accompanying the treatment and dressings of the bleeding ulcers that accompany the edema in both my legs. They are trying to determine wha is causing the edema. In the meanwhile the dressings are severely and can't be tolerated just by trying to ignore it. My question is can I take some form of Benadryl (OTC) while I am taking the Oxycodone. I am a 65 year old mail weighing approx. 250 lbs. Please advise. Thank you, B. Weiss

Brief Answer:
You need urgent attention to the dressing.

Detailed Answer:
Hi xxxxxxxx,
Welcome to Health care magic. I have read & understood your concern.
The type of itching associated with dressing could be due to the medicines applied while dressing ./ allergy to medicines given for healing of the/ It could be sign of stasis dermatitis caused by poor blood circulation to the part due to local edema.
* Anti allergic medicine like Benadryl would help if the cause of itching is due to allergy till you see the doctor.& a couple of doses 12 hours apart, can be taken with Oxycodone - there is no specific interaction except for drowsiness. If there is relief with it you need change of medicines ( Oral & local )
Treatment of stasis dermatitis consists mainly of improving circulation & relief of edema. Again certain applications ( calamine, antibiotic ointments)are known to cause itching ...
* So to consult treating doctor earliest/ see another vascular surgeon if treating doctor is not available .
* As self care you have to -
-avoid standing or sitting for long time.
- Raise your leg (put it on a pillow / prop it up )
- Take your diabetes medicines & advised diet strictly.
* Normal blood sugar is desired for good healing.
With proper management & self care you would get relieved of the problem. This should be followed by exercises & healthy life style for good diabetic control & good peripheral circulation.
I hope that solves your query. Any follow up query is welcome.
Thanks.
