Does Deprakote Cause Stomach Pain And Indigestion?

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Jun 2014
Question: I started taking Deprakote in February and it has helped with my mood swings. However, I've also experienced many of the side effects since that time. Recently the stomach pain, indigestion and lodging of gas (I guess) has become almost unbearable. Today I stopped taking the Deprakote and feel a little better physically.

Brief Answer:
You can try antidepressant in stead of depakote

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for using healthcare magic. I, Dr Abhishek Kapoor, would help you in this query.

Depakote contains valproate and it is a mood stabilizer. It is commonly used in bipolar disorder. If you do not have any history of bipolar disorder or mania, then there is no need to take it. In depression or anxiety, you can take antidepressant like paroxetine or escitalopram that would help to control the symptoms. These drugs have much lesser side effects as compared to depakote. You can also try some relaxation exercise like JPMR.

One thing, i want to say that if dose of depakote is more than 500 mg, then decrease it gradually by 250 mg after every four days, otherwise you could get withdrawal seizure. Rest, you can discuss with your doctor.

In case, you need further help, you can ask.
