Does Down Syndrome Skip Generations?

default
Posted on Tue, 17 Mar 2015
Question: Can a grandchild who has an aunt or uncle who has down's syndrome (on the paternal side from paternal grandfather) inherit similar genes but have unformed skull density at the back of the head but no other appearance of down's syndrome? Are there other things they can also inherit from these genes and paternal grandmother with genetic pool disorder (bleeding)?

Brief Answer:
Down syndrome does not skip generations. Very unlikely that the child has D

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone through the problem in details. Down syndrome is not a condition that skips generations. If the mother or the father does not have Down syndrome, I would not suspect the possibility of it being passed on to the offspring. The described congenital abnormalities are not linked to Down syndrome and I do not think that the child could have these manifestations yet no other manifestation of Down syndrome. Rather, they could be incidental and caused due to some problem during the first trimester of the pregnancy in which the child was delivered.

Unless you mention specifically about the genetic pool disorder, it is hard to comment whether there is a possibility of of it skipping a generation. But speaking in a nutshell, there can be a possibility but it is not necessary that if some problem is present in the child, that it is necessary to be attributable to the parents or grandparents.

Hope that helps.
