Does Epley Maneuver Cause Tinnitus?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Feb 2015
Question: I was treated by the Epley maneuver for BPPV. The diagnosis of BPPV WAS INCORRECT and I did not have it, as told by other doctors. As a result of the Epley maneuver I develoed tinnitus within the next 24 hours. This tinnitus has been persistent. Could the Epley maneuver and/or as the Dix-Hallpike maneuver caused this, as head injuries can cause tinnitus? Let us assume that both maneuvers were done correctly. Can the dropping of the head and the rest have caused this? I know that there is nothing in the literature about this, but is this a possibility? The timing makes it seems like a cause.
I should add that the Epley was done to the right ear and this is where I have the tinnitus?

Brief Answer:
epelys/hall pike- no relation with tinnitus.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

have gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having tinnitus.

Answers and solutions for your queries.

1. Vertigo is related to vestibular organ situated in inner ear, Dix-hallpike is a diagnostic procedure, Epley maneuver is the treatment of choice for BPPV. None of these procedures can cause tinnitus.

Tinnitus is related to hair cells of cochlea of inner organ, responsible for hearing, which are situated in inner ear.

2. Yes. head injuries, age related loss of hair cells can produce tinnitus and hard of hearing.

3. Dropping of head or rest can cause vertigo, but not tinnitus.

In my opinion, you may be having senile deafness (senorineural hearing loss), it will presents as tinnitus.

I suggest you to undergo audiometry (to know the type and degree of hearing loss) and Eustachian tube dysfunction, where both are the commonest causes for tinnitus.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.
