Does Fluconazole Interact With Alcohol?

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Sep 2017
Question: I took Flucanazole150mg yesterday for a vaginal yeast infection. I drank a pretty good amount of hard alcohol last night. And today my yeast infection doesn't appear to be much better. Does alcohol block fluconazole from working, or do I just need to wait a few more days?

Brief Answer:
Information

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Alcohol and Fluconazole do not interact. However, alcohol can increase the risk of yeast and fungal infections.

Still, the Fluconazole may not have had enough time to work. It can take a couple of days to see the effects. That's why the instructions to wait 72 hours to take a 2nd dose if no improvement.

I will assume that you already tried topical/intravaginal anti-yeast creams without success if you are now trying oral Fluconazole. Another option for a resistant yeast infection (if that is for sure the cause of the problem) is boric acid powder vaginal suppositories.

I hope this information helps. Please let me know if I can provide further information.

In the meantime, avoid alcohol and a lot of sugars while trying to get over the yeast infection - and get good sleep to help strengthen your immune system. Good luck.

No, I have not tried any other treatments. I went straight to the doctor because it has been 20 years since I had a yeast infection so I wanted to make sure that's what it was before treating.
The Fluconazole is my first course of treatment for this infection. But I see no improvement after 24 hours. Is that normal?

Well, typically there is a bit of improvement by 24 hours, but give it another day. The benefit may not be apparent yet.
