Does JE Vaccine Cause Fever And Body Pain In A Child?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Dec 2015
Question: My one year old child was given Jenvac vaccine on 25.11.15. Doctor didn't inform regarding any possible side effects. On 26.11.15 afternoon he developed fever around 101F. We took him to the same doctor who told that it is only a cold fever and he prescribed P-125 to be administered whenever temperature exceeds 100F. He also prescribed Cepodem 50mg for 15 days. I learned that Jencav has side effects like fever, bodyache etc. Cepodem is a high power antibiotic. So I gave only P-125 whenever required and spared the Cepodem as there is no sign of severe cold/cough. The fever is recurring till date with approx. 8 hours interval. Should I take it as a side effect of Jenvac or go for Cepodem for 15 days ?

Brief Answer:
No need for antibiotic - Vaccination fever can last 24-48 hours

Detailed Answer:
Hi...Sometimes any vaccination induced fever can last 24-48 hours. But as today is 3rd day post vaccination and the fever is spacing out (coming only 8 hours once) you can wait.

NO NEED TO START ANTIBIOTIC WITHOUT PROPER EVALUATION OR DOING A BLOOD CULTURE. EVEN IF IS STARTED GIVING CEPODEM FOR 15 DAYS IS NOT WARRANTED. WE NEED TO BE SURE ABOUT THE BACTERIOLOGICAL DIAGNOSIS BEFORE GIVING AN ANTIBIOTIC FOR SUCH A PROLONGED PERIOD.

The other possibility is that it could be a viral illness. I will tell you how a viral illness behaves so that you can be more confident.

Fever of few days without any localizing signs could as well a viral illness. Usually rather than fever, what is more important is the activity of the child, in between 2 fever episodes on the same day. If the kid is active and playing around when there is no fever, it is probably viral illness and it doesn't require antibiotics at all. Once viral fever comes it will there for 4-7 days. So do not worry about duration if the kid is active.

Thanks for above information sir. In between I consulted another Pediatrician regarding the recurring fever. He examined the child and told that it may be an infection due to changing weather which got amplified due to fever of Jenvac vaccine. He prescribed to continue Cepodem for 5 days total. Also he prescribed Azithral liquid 100 for 3 days. I started giving the same to child since yesterday afternoon. Fever returned around 6 PM last evening and then 8 AM this morning. Child is active between the spells as you suggested for symptom of viral fever.

My question is how far should I wait before going for diagnosis test ?

Brief Answer:
Diagnostic tests are based on symptoms - not duration please

Detailed Answer:
Hi.... any diagnostic test is based on the symptoms of the kid, rather than this duration of fever.

As I have already suggested in my previous discussion - Viral fever can last for 4 to 7 days.

You can wait till 7 days of the kid is active and then go ahead with investigations. An active kid is a well kid.

Even after 7 days if fever is still 101 and above then we can investigate.

Again you have been prescribed 2 antibiotics (Cepodem and Azithromycin). Both are not indicated when the kid is active in-between 2 fever episodes. They should not be given without blood culture being done.
