Does Levofloxacin Intake Cause Arrhythmias?

default
Posted on Tue, 16 Sep 2014
Question: Hello I have been on two antibiotics for 8 days now, for Diverticulitis, and possible pneumonia. They are Levaquni 500 MG I take one tablet a day for ten days, the other is Flagyl 500MG twice a day. I just tried to cut up a potato for dinner just doing that one small task made my heart race, pain across my back, and had trouble breathing. I was feeling better so I wanted to get out of bed and try to help my husband, it was very aware to me that I needed to lie down right away. Yesterday my husband printed the side effects for these meds, one of them was heart arrhythmia. What can I do about this? can I stop taking the antibiotics with only two more days to go? I don't want to go back to the hospital if this will clear up on it's own.
Thank you

Brief Answer:
try hydration and adjust for Hypotension

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX
Thanks for posting your query.
You are right in the finding that Levofloxacin has got arrhythmias but it may not be the case causing your trouble.
When you are resting for some days then your body gets adjustment time if you take to some exertion. This phenomenon is called postural Hypotension. It is increased in manifestation when you are sick and on many drugs.
Try to take lots of salted household liquids to ensure hydration.
Before you assume upright posture, sit on the edge for 5 minute with legs dangling down the bed so to avoid Hypotension and fast heart rate reflex.
I hope this answers your query. In case you have any follow up queries or doubts, you can forward them for me, and I shall be glad to help you. Please accept my answer in case you do not have further queries. Wishing you good health.

Thank you for your help, However you didn't say whether I can stop taking the antibiotics for today and tomorrow? Would just the two days do me more damage, I have been on them for 8 days, already.
Thank you again

antibiotics should continue

Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome back.
You should continue the antibiotics as advised by your local clinician and must discuss with him about stopping it, if your problems persist even after you observe the measures suggested by me.
