Does MRI Angiography Cause Any Birth Defects?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Jul 2015
Question: My husband has to have angiogram in order to check if the iliac artery needs a stent or no. We are planning on extending our family. Is there any risk with continuing conceiving attempts? Or should we wait after the angiogram? Is the contrast and MRI correlated with baby's genetics in future? Thank you so much your answer is appreciated.

Brief Answer:
MRI angiography is a safe diagnostic procedure

Detailed Answer:

Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would like to explain that no risks come for your husband's health if you continue conceiving attempts. So relax and don't worry!

MRI angiography is considered a very safe procedure. No radiation, or toxicity is present during this diagnostic test. MRI uses magnetic field during examination. It doesn't cause mutations to the germinal cells. So it has no effect on a possible conceiving in the future.

Gadolinium contrast (chelated gadolinium) used in MRI angiography is harmless and causes no risk for germinal cells. The only side effect is in patients with kidney failure, where the kidney function can worsen after the intravenous contrast (in some patients).

So there is no risk in continuing conceiving attempts. The contrast and MRI has no effect on a future baby.

Hope to have been helpful!

Greetings! Dr. Iliri
