Does Mucolite Help In Treating Cough And Cold In Infant?

Question: Hi doctor,

My 3 month old son is having cold and cough. Paed advised to take mucolite drops. If sneezing is there, asked to take maxtra drops. Is mucolite will cure both cough and cold. Pls advise.

I completely understand your concerns but don't worry. In my opinion your child seems to be suffering from an episode of respiratory tract infection. It's probably viral as you have not mentioned about any high spikes of fever associated. You may take the following measures to help him:
1. Continue with Maxtra drops regularly for 3-5 days. It will be good. But don't give more than three doses as it's also mild sedative and can make child lethargic if overdosed.
2. If your child has secretory sounds of cough, than you may also continue with Mucolite drops. That will help to dissolve the cough.
3. Keep him well hydrated by regular feeds. Continue breastfeeding if possible because breast milk has antibodies which can fight many infections.
4. Use nasal saline drops and suction to keep nostrils clean if they are blocked.
5. Use acetaminophen drops for fever episodes if they occur.
6.Use a room humidifier to help him breath humidifier air. It's soothing in cough and cold.

Both the drugs act differently

Mucolite helps in breaking the thick secretions present in airways and helps in clearing them up.

Maxtra has drugs which help in stopping the inflammatory mediators production in response to infection and thus treats by decongestion and anti secretory action.

Since both the drugs have different modes of action, I would recommend you to take both as I mentioned earlier.

How much quantity and in what interval and for how many days should both the drops should be given.

Also if maxtra drops s given ll he cry for feed or should wake him up and give him.

Due to lack of breast milk I'm providing him formula feed. How much quantity should hr consume for his age. His birth weight was 2.780kg. What weight should he be right now. Thanks in advance

Mucolite drops 0.5 ml thrice daily for 3 days

Go for on demand feeding. This means that feed him as much as he demands and as frequently as he demands. If he doesn't demand and stay asleep for more than 4hrs, then actively wake and feed him. If you are giving formula feeds, then prepare them with utmost hygiene and sterilize the feeders after every use.

He should weigh around 4.5-5 kg at this age.
