Does Omeprazole Cause Erectile Dysfunction?
Omeprazole has been known to rarely cause erectile dysfunction
Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for writing in to us.
I have read through your query in detail.
Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor medication used to reduce production of stomach acids. Rarely it has been known to cause erectile dysfunction in men. Studies have shown that though the exact mechanism is not clear, omeprazole reduces the level of serum free testosterone level and this might cause erectile dysfunction. However this has not been accepted by all researchers.
One such research connecting omeprazole to erectile dysfunction was recorded by the Netherlands Pharmacovigilance Centre which collected data from patients taking omeprazole for 15 years from 1992 until 2006. Data showed 10 patients having erectile dysfunction or impotence in association with omeprazole. The time to onset varied from 1 day to 10 weeks. Most of them recovered after stopping of treatment.
Please feel free to correct any oversight in my interpretation of your problems and discuss them in detail as per your requirements.
Hope your query is answered.
Do write back if you have any doubts.
Regards,
Dr.Vivek
