Does Omeprazole Interact With Citalopram And Buspirone?
obesity (past two and a half years bmi > 40)
svt (ablation done in 2006 )
pvcs (dx around time as svt have numerous per day)
panic disorder (age 14)
dysthymic disorder (recently dx)
Had echo in 2012 was "normal", ekgs normal
thyroid normal/ bmp and mg normal
chest xray normal
Recently have had bad 8 on 1-10 scale, dull gnawing pain in upper epigastric region. my pcp perscribed omeprazole 20 mg daily I started it but stopped bc I read drug interactions with my current meds which are
citalopram 7.5 mg daily
alprazolam extended release 2 mg daily
l abetalol 50 mg bid
buspirone 5 mg bid
I bought zantac over the counter to take since it works to reduce acid in stomach and plan to take 150 mg bid
I asked pcp for switch but said omeperzole was ok... I stopped it anyways. From what I can see zantac will not interact with my current meds like the omeprazole. what are your thoughts on this? also can I still take tums for break the pain. I will have endoscopy prior to weight loss aurgery.
Generally these medicines are well tolerated.
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.
I have gone carefully through the details provided. I doubt if there would be any problems if you take omeprazole. Its inclusion in the list of possible interactions does not necessarily indicate that you too would get an interaction. It just indicates a possibility. But generally it is found to be well tolerated. However, you can continue to take Zantac 150 twice a day before food if you are sceptical. Since Zantac is not in the list of possible interactions, you can assume it to be safe. You may take some antacids whenever required. What is more important is lifestyle modification. Since you are obese, it has to be that the total amount of energy taken in as food is greater than the total energy expenditure. You need to increase the energy expenditure. Take regular morning walk. It will help in mobilsing your bowels. In that case the acids too would not get stagnated to cause the symptoms. Also take small but frequent meals instead of large meals at long intervals.
Hope that helps.
