Does OxyContin Help With Depression And Anxiety?
Oxycontin is an opioid-narcotic substance,Please do not use it
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for writing to us.
I can understand your concern.
Oxycontin is an opioid substance. Only medical use is to relieve severe pain like that of cancer. Otherwise it is not indicated in any physical or psychiatric condition.Any opioid substance causes severe dependance to the body after more than 4 weeks regular use. It means your body needs that substance for working. If you do not get that substance you will have severe withdrawal features like body ache, muscle pain, watery eyes, diarrhea, yawning, anxiety and so on.Oxycontin can cause the same.
Oxycontin gives relief and high mood initially in normal person as well as person suffering from any psychological or physical condition. But later on due to tolerance more amount of substance needed.Ultimately body becomes dependent on it. Long term use of any opioid is also hazardous. It will cause respiratory depression, visual problem, weakness, erection problem, nervous system problems and so on. That is why it is not indicated for general use.
For severe depression and anxiety combination of drugs, psychotherapy and electro convulsive therapy(ECT) will be useful.
If you can provide more detail about history of depression with duration symptoms and exact drug details I can give more comments about treatment aspect.
In conclusion please do not use oxycontin for this purpose. It will create more problem later on.
Hope I have answered your query,I will be happy to help further.
Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
Electro convulsive therapy is barbaric in my opinion, I have tried it and will never again. Half the drugs I have been prescribed can be sold as a chemical lobotomy, but the one thing that makes me feel better and is perfectly safe is the one I'm not allowed. Ethically to me this is criminal. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you
Please do tell why a combination of drugs like neuroplectics, possibly life long, are better than the oxy cotin ? I know people who take 100 mg of OxyContin daily for years and years. Are you trying to say that the Thorazine I was prescribed has more desire able side effects or is somehow more appropriate than OxyContin ? Really ?? Because in my eyes the morbid obeisity, sucicidal tendencies, complete lack of sexual function, and all around lethargy toward life on (Thorazine, and about 6 more others I tried) are a much worse trade off than what, a little dependency ? So what. I have tried them all and finally found one that works. I understand the side effect issue, but as far as I'm concerned everything else I have tried has far more severe and mind altering side effects, please help me understand why taking any nueroplectic for life is a reasonable option but OxyContin is not. I'm very confused. Thank you very much for your time.

thorazine is not used now much, it is very old molecule
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Extremely sorry for delayed response.
Thorazine - chlorpromazine is very old anti psychotic drug. It is used rarely now in agitated patients. It has lots of serious side effects you have mentioned. It is not used in depression and anxiety.
But believe me there are lots of newer drugs for psychiatric conditions with least side effects and very good tolerability. Long term studies have proven their efficacy in different clinical trial as well as in clinical practice.Considering these I suggest you should use one of them.
Oxycontin is highly addictive. Abuse can quickly lead to addiction. Both abuse and addiction can cause serious health problems, including death.
Oxycontin impacts the brain, leading to temporary feelings of intense pleasure. Addiction to oxycontin can develop very quickly, even with minimal use. The addiction can be physical, in that a habitual user’s body craves the drug. It can also be mental, in that a user consciously desires the drug’s effects. A person who is addicted to oxycontin will do whatever it takes to get more of the drug, regardless of the risks or consequences.
Long-term oxycontin use has serious health consequences, including brain damage. Oxycontin abuse can impair the brain’s production of natural painkillers and dopamine.
Prolonged use of oxycontin associated with nausea, vomiting, weakened immune system, slow breathing rate, coma, increased risk of HIV or infectious disease (common in intravenous use),increased risk of hepatitis (common in intravenous use), hallucinations, collapsed veins or clogged blood vessels, risk of choking.
I can write more and more.
From this explanation I suggest not to use oxycontin for depression and anxiety.
ECT is overall good therapy in severe depression. If you have bad experience, it is ok.
Oxycontin is a narcotic product and use of it without doctor's permission can be illegal. I can understand your concern but the fact I have already explained.Doctors can not write this drug just on insistence of patient, he/she has to take clinical judgement in long term benefit of the patient.
Feel free to ask if more queries.
