Does Provigil Cause Agitation?
Question: I Wonder if provigil is causing agitation after time. The first time I took provigil (adrafinil 300 mg actually) I got sweaty, confused, and somewhat afraid. It all went away when I took my morning klonopin and lamictal. from that point it has helped me with concentration and mood.
I've been taking it on and off for a couple of weeks as I'm worried about my liver. The last two times I took it I felt myself getting irritable and somewhat nervous.
I thought provigil was supposed to not have these effects, but drugs with adrenergic effects tend to hit me poorly (buspar, wellbutrin, serzone, desipramine). I may be looking at this the wrong way. I currently take celexa and Lamictal, and I have had to increase my celexa by 10 mgs recently to help with my depression. not sure if maybe I am getting an agitation from all three somehow.
Can these effects build over time with this drug? I'm wondering if I should just put it down altogether, or maybe lower my dose (although I think 300mg adrafinil=100mg provigil).
thanks

Brief Answer:
Provigil side effects
Detailed Answer:
Thanks for the excellent question.
A lot of your theorizing is actually probably true. Provigil can cause the symptoms you are describing, and the first thing I would do is try a lower dose. Sometimes, however, people initially respond to antidepressant (Celexa) increases with paradoxical agitation/anxiety. I would give it a couple weeks on the Celexa and see if the anxiety wears off as your body gets used to the higher dose.
