Does Victoza Cause Elevated ALT And AST Levels?
Question: Hello, I have been on Victoza for 6 weeks and just got my lab results back today. My ALT and AST levels were 167 and 87 after being slightly elevated in October. The Victoza is working on my A1C and my blood sugar to keep it below 100 and I have lost weight, changed my diet and exercise at least 45 min to 1 hr a day.Feel great. Very upset with the levels. Could the Victoza be causing this?
Brief Answer:
Yes
Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.
Victoza is possible cause of liver marker elevation and this is on of its side effects
However, such elevation is usually slight and no liver damage occur. In your case this is moderate elevation of liver markers and I suggest to repeat test in 2-3 weeks. if there is still elevation you should do liver ultrasound, check liver viral markers and avoid alcohol and liver affecting medications for 1 month. Wish you good health. Regards

hi
Detailed Answer:
First you need to avoid drinking alcohol and smoking if you do it.
Secondly, you need to watch your diet, avoid pre-prepared foods that contain excess sodium and refined sugar, eat more vegetables and fruit, avoid fried foo. Fish and olive oil is beneficial also.
Also, some supplemetns may be used such as; Trvitamin B-12 and Coenzyme Q10, vitamin A, C and D.
However, if this is caused by medications then only stopping it may help so you should consider switching or stopping Victoza.
Wish you good health.
