Does Warfarin Have A Negative Effect On Liver?

an atrial fib experience about 12 hrs. after a knee replacement in 2005?? Was back in
sinus rythmn within a short time in hospital;however, given a life sentence on warfarin. Have
consulted cardiologists in this home city but they all tell me it is to prevent me from having a CVA??
Thankfully, I have remained in 'sinus rythmn ever since (sp.) throughout except for palpatations/
especially when I was tired or stressed but other than that, I exercise, walk, etc. and thankfully stay
in sinus rythmn.
Since a recent abdominal scan, my liver is not happy....some abrasions, and right lobe enlarged??
thank you for consultation.
Not advisable. However you can start another.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Jyothi BL and I will be answering your query.
Looking at the medical history and current query, my opinion is as follows:
1. Warfarin is not responsible for your present liver scan findings. It rarely affects liver.
2. Discontinuing warfarin can caused rebound risk of thrombosis. You need to start on other anti-coagulants, if you want to discontinue this.
3. At this age, taking warfarin is advisable and reduces risk of not only CVA, but also myocardial infarction or any thrombosis, anywhere in the body.
Liver abrasions will heal. Right lobe enlargement alone will not be due to warfarin.
If you wish to discontinue warfarin, and go for another anticoagulant, then it takes time to adjust dose, monitor adverse reactions and keep watching out for side effects.
Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
