Does A Gastric Band Cause Hiatal Hernia?

default
Posted on Tue, 10 Oct 2017
Question: I had a gastric band which had to be removed due to refluxed. Now I have a moderate hiatal hernia. Did the gastric band cause the hiatal hernia? Can the hiatal hernia be repair with surgery? If so will I have to go under general anesthesia? What are the dangers of such a surgery? I have gained some weight back since the gastric band was removed and have been authorized to have gastric sleeve. Can a surgeon do both procedures at the same time and if so what are the dangers of each and is it more dangerous to have both done at the same time? What is the recovery time for these surgries? How much time should I take off of work. I have a sitting job and do not have to lift to do my work.
How can I find the best surgeon for this procedure? I live in XXXXXXX How can I determine who is the best surgeon for the job in this area? I do not want this information shared with anyone other than the doctor who is providing the consultation without my permission. I do not want my current doctors to know I am seeking more information from this source. What are the possible negative outcomes of this course of action over time? What is the most likely outcome of having these surgries?

Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Noted the history well and understood your concerns.
I can understand the concerns you have raised.
To answer your queries:
Gastric band is not known to cause hiatal hernia.
Obesity is one of the most important reason for hiatal hernia.
Repair depends upon the type and grade of hiatal hernia and usually done if medications fail to resolve the problems.
Surgery if needed is done under general anesthesia.
Both the procedures can be done in one sitting provided there is need and the on-the-table findings decide the exact course of surgical management as decided by your Surgeon.
Surgery has its own complications and benefit and should be weight against each other.
Recovery time: usually a few weeks.
But the timing depends upon a mix of many a factors.
You can search online, ask the patients who have undergone the surgery in your area or the groups of patients if any in your area. Search and let me know the names of the Surgeon or centers so that I can guide you better.
Medical information are always kept secretes so no worry on this aspect.
