Does A Red Bump On The Skin Between Anus And Vagina Suggest Herpes Infection?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Jul 2015
Question: I have a smallish red bump on the skin between my anus and the lip of my vagina. It looks a little like a zit and has been there for about 2 weeks without much significant change. Is it possible/probable that this is herpes? I had sex with a new partner last month but used a condom and don't have any reason to believe he was infected with HSV1 or 2.

I have also attached a picture of the bump. I also shave the area regularly if that makes a difference.

Brief Answer:
Not likely to be herpes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
From the symptoms that you have described and the photo attached, this bump sounds like small irritated hair follicle causing folliculitis or clogged pore. Folliculitis starts when hair follicles are damaged by friction from clothing or blockage of the follicle or shaving.
Herpetic infection presents with recent onset of painful and multiple ulcers and not as a single such swelling.
As far as the treatment is concerned, apply warm compresses and keep the area clean and apply some topical antiseptics. Also avoid wearing tight fitting clothes and wear loose-fitting cotton clothing and underwear. Wash the area well with an antibacterial soap or mild soap like dove. Avoid any kind of cosmetics. Topical antibiotics such as Neosporin are also useful.
This is likely to improve in next few days.
