Does A Ruptured Ovarian Cyst Cause Pain And Pressure?

default
Posted on Tue, 15 Apr 2014
Question: My doctor found that I have two fibroids in my uterus. One is 1 in. in size, the other 2 inches. Should I be worried about their size? Also, they discovered I have fluid in my cul-de-sac, most likely from a ruptured cyst. Can this be the cause of my pain and pressure more than the fibroids, and how long can the fluid remain there?

Brief Answer: DETAILS ARE GIVEN BELOW. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for writing to us. Followings are my comments: 1) Ruptured ovarian cyst is usually a self-limiting & you only require expectant management and analgesics. Abdominal pain and feeling of more pressure may be due to this OR combined with fibroid. However, the pain usually lasts from a few days to several weeks until fluid is absorbed completely. 2) Uterine fibroid is MOST COMMON BENIGN tumor and mostly asymptomatic in case of small size. Your one fibroid is small and other is slightly large. Proper treatment depends on clinical presentation and location of fibroid. Medical management like hemostatic agent with oral progesterone tab is usually given for 3 to 6 months duration in case of heavy period bleeding. Size of fibroid can be suppressed by drug treatment. Kindly, consult with your GYNECOLOGIST regarding this and procure complete prescription. Hope, it helps for your information. Kindly, close the discussion if you don't have any other query. Thank you for your response. I feel like since I have been diagnosed with this, I am feeling discomfort and cramps constantly. Can this be psychosomatic? I am due for my period any minute now, but its a couple days late, most likely due to the copious amounts of stress I'm feeling regarding this. Does the pain get worse right before periods? Does the pressure on the bladder get worse as well? Also, if fibroids grow, how fast can they accelerate in size? My upper abdomen hurts as well, is this pressure from the fibroids, or am I just making myself sick with worry? Thanks so much for your help.

Brief Answer: DETAILS ARE GIVEN BELOW. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for follow up queries. Uterine fibroid can cause these clinical symptoms like abdominal discomfort, painful period or heavy bleeding, backache, urinary frequency or retention etc. Mental stress and inadequate bed rest may play an important role for above clinical presentation. YES, abdominal pain may increase just before starting of period and pressure over bladder may be present, which leads to urinary frequency. You can take analgesics and apply hot water bag/ bottle or cold ice pack on that region and start compression for 20 to 30 min. Drink plenty of water and do light exercise. It will be definitely helpful to reduce painful cramp. Uterine fibroid is BENIGN tumor and it grows slowly over the time period. It is better to consult with your GYNECOLOGIST for overall clinical examination and monitoring. Medical treatment can be given to control symptoms, shrink tumor and ultrasound fibroid destruction, myomectomy or radio frequency ablation are the other treatment option. Upper abdominal pain may be due to indigestion problem, acidity or irregular diet habit. Don't stay in empty stomach for long time and take 6 meals instead of 3 large meal. Drink plenty of water and avoid fatty/ spicy/ high calorie foods. You can take PANTOPRAZOLE group of medication in the morning. Kindly, procure a complete prescription from your doctor. Hope, I have answered your queries. Kindly, close the discussion. All the best and wish your good health. Regards, Dr Soumen

Thank you, that helps my mind a bit. I am just wondering if the burning and discomfort could be from an ulcer manifested by the stress these fibroids have caused, or do I just have a nervous stomach? Is there such a thing as a nervous stomach, and how can I tell the difference between that and an ulcer?

Brief Answer: DETAILS ARE GIVEN BELOW. Detailed Answer: Hello, Thanks for query. Stress factor can induce indigestion problem, alter bowel habit, acidity or even ulcer which can cause upper abdominal pain. If abdominal pain is aggravated soon after taking food, then it is most likely due to gastric ulcer and if abdominal pain is relieved by taking food, then it is more likely related to duodenal ulcer. However, clinical examination and endoscopy can confirm the diagnosis. You can consult with your GASTROENTEROLOGIST for proper investigation and treatment. Nervous Stomach is NOT the proper term. It is commonly known as nervousness which is a phenomenon that is attributed to a number of factors like withdrawal from alcohol, hormonal disorders, psychiatric disorders, stress, conditions such as stroke and excessive use of stimulants and other substances that alter the normal working of the body. SUGGESTION: I suggest you to consult with your doctor for overall clinical examination and proper management of the case. Hope, it helps for you. Kindly, close the discussion. Regards, Dr Soumen
