Posted on Fri, 29 Dec 2023
Question: My sister had a balloon inserted into her stomach for weight loss 6 mos ago and when they removed it they accidently saw a 2 cm lesion in her distal stomach. Can you read report and give me your opinion. She is already scheduled for a EUS and EGD. How likely could this be cancer? Should we be worried? She has good lab work and no symptoms of any kind.

Brief Answer:

GIST.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

According to the report, your sister might have a tumor called GIST. This type of tumor grows from the stomach muscle.

It is much better to have it rather than regular cancer (which grows from the mucosal layer) as it usually does not metastases and acts like a benign tumor.

And there is no need to remove the stomach in case of this tumor, just a tumor.

It is also not a large one, so it should not be the reason to concern.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

So a submucosal tumor is not from the mucosal layer? Its from the stomach muscle? What are the chances that it might be a cancer? Could this still be a cancer?

Brief Answer:

The chance of cancer is very low.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

When you perform gastroscopy, cancer is seen as a mucosal tumor. In your sister, it's submucosal, means it comes from the layer below the mucosa (which is the muscular layer). So, yes, the chance of cancer is very low.

Hope I have answered your query.
