Does An Obsession Over Collecting Pictures Of Little Girls By An Adult Who Was Sexually Abused As A Child Require Psychiatric Attention?

Question: Hello. I would like to get your opinion please on the following hypothetical situation: a 58-year-old white male was sexually abused by his 18-year-old mail uncle when he was 8 years old. This abuse happened about 3 or 4 times and consisted of the subject repeatedly stroking the uncle's penis – there was never any penetration of any kind at any time. The subject then suppressed this memory for over 50 years. Although the incident was revealed to family members/parents and grandparents, it basically was dismissed and swept under the rug. Subsequently, at the current age of 58, it has been discovered that the subject has questionable pictures on his computer. There are hundreds of pictures of little girls that are about 8 years old. None of these images are naked, nor are they in any sexually explicit poses. These images were downloaded from Bing (a search engine). The police were involved, but after reviewing these images, dismiss them. There was nothing that qualified as child pornography. I would like your opinion please on whether such an individual should seek counseling. Overall, what do you make of this? I really appreciate your help. Thank you so much and I hope to hear back from you soon.

Brief Answer:
Advice to follow up with psychiatrist or psychotherapist

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Abuse of any kind to a child can leave emotional trauma which can persists into adulthood especially if treatment or help have not been given. The person described in the scenario definitely need counseling. He may also need treatment with medications along with therapy. Since the police have already been involved with him, there is a definite possibility of being caught with child pornography in future. Even though he did not have any pictures that was explicitly of child sexual content or nudity, there is definite risk for this person to be involved with such content in the future, which have major consequences.
So, it is very important that the person seek help as soon as possible.

Hello and thank you for responding so quickly. He is already on an antidepressant. He was seeing a counselor, but I don't think that has done much. Do you think seeing a psychiatrist would be more beneficial? Also, do you think, at this point, that he would be categorized as a peddaphile? There have been no signs at all of anything inappropriate – he has never acted on anything. But it is very confusing to me. I don't understand what it could mean to have these pictures of little girls who were not even naked. Would you have a theoretical guess? Thank you so much. I really appreciate your help.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again,
You are welcome
I recommend that seeking help from a psychiatrist is the best option now. A combination of medication along with therapy will provide best results. It can take time to identify a medication that works for an individual and is usually done through trial and error method.
I cannot give a definite opinion on whether he can be diagnosed with pedophilia without interviewing the person and exploring more into the situation. However, his behavior specified here definitely puts him at risk for pedophilic tendencies.
Please be advised t seek help from a psychiatrist for detailed evaluation.
