Does Being Obese Cause Diabetes And Fatty Liver?

Posted on Fri, 10 Jul 2015
Question: I am a diabetic with fatty liver. My recent blood tests showed higher ratings than normal. Bilibrubin 1.5 mg/dl, AST 38 u/I and Glucose 101 mg/dl. Will losing weight eliminate these issues? I am about 100 lbs overweight and have recently gained weight due to stress. What OTC remidies do you recommend for stress? That would probably help me a lot. I notice my blood pressure and glucose readings fluctuate from day-to-day. Oh yes, I also take meds for HBP.

Brief Answer:
AST,bilirubin, glucose levels not considered as high;reference range is need

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have gone through your medical history carefully and understood your concerns.

1. You are saying to be a diabetic but having a blood glucose of 101 mg/dL (fasting I suppose) which falls within normal range. You are also saying to be on meds for blood sugar.

Usually, I ask my patients to provide the previous records of blood sugar levels (bsl) to compare with the recent ones to see if you are doing progress with changes in your diet and lifestyle regiment.

Meds for high bsl are also helping in keeping your bsl within acceptable level. Can you please provide the names of meds you are currently taking for a more specific opinion?

2. You are also reporting to be obese and have fatty liver. Being obese will aggravate diabetes issues. On the other hand, both diabetes and being obese will aggravate/trigger fatty liver.

The most important thing is to continue with diet and lifestyle changes as you are reporting to be done so far.

3. With regards to blood pressure (bp), it is common for diabetics to suffer of high bp during their life sooner or later. If you try to control your bsl and to lose weight, you won't have problems with high bp either.

For the moment, you are reporting to be taking meds for HBP, can you please provide their names so I can assist you further?

4. Stress is an aggravating factor for all the actual health problems you are having including:
- obesity: as it will increase hunger
- diabetes
- high blood pressure

OTC remedies for stress I usually advise to my patients include: aloe vera, valeriana, chamomile tea or supplements.

Exercising and breathing fresh air can also help.

5. For the moment, your AST and bilirubin level are not considered high; however, I need to know the reference range your lab is using to determine it.

This is indicating that although you are having fatty liver, its function is not altered yet. If you continue with:
- eating healthy
- exercising; trying to sweat every day
- trying to cope with stress
- take meds as prescribed

you'll manage to:
- control diabetes and high bp
- lose weight
- reverse fatty liver

Hope it was of help!
