Does Cold And Cough During Pregnancy Cause Any Harm To The Fetus?
My wife is 5 weeks pregnant. She has suffered couple of miscarriages and ectopic pregnancy earlier. We have undergone fertility treatment to achieve this pregnancy. I have couple of questions.
1. My wife didnot get strong positive untill 18dpo. At 14dpo her hcg was 34. At 5 weeks her hcg is 535. Is these values are good?
2. She is suffering from cold n cough from last 2 days. Temperature never crossed 99. Did not take any medicine as well. Does this cause any harm to fetus?
Please help.
Thanks, XXXXXXX

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
1. Normal beta-HCG levels in early weeks (after conception) are as follows:
1) 0-1 week > 0-50 mIU/ml
2) 1-2 weeks > 40-300 mIU/ ml
3) 3-4 weeks > 500-6000 mIU/ ml and so on (Peak level on 8 weeks).
The levels at 5 weeks are normal right now. These levels should double in next 48 hours which is confirmatory of a viable pregnancy.
2. Mild cough and cold will not harm the fetus in any way. Do not worry.
In this changing season the cause is most likely viral so treatment with antibiotics is not needed but she should do saline gargles. To make a good warm saline preparation you should add 5 grams table salt to 250 ml of water and make it XXXXXXX warm.
Then do gargles after every meal or after she eats anything during day time.
Cover with sufficient warm clothes all the time and avoid open cold air exposure as this could aggravate the problem.
She can also take low doses of decongestant medicines like half tablet of Sinarest as required for congestion.
Keep well hydrated with plenty of warm fluids and especially fruit juices.
For running nose she may apply 2 drops of saline nasal drops to each nostril twice a day for relief.
Eat plenty of fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables. Eat high protein diet like cereals, pulses, chicken, lean meat, eggs.
In case there is sputum production with cough, considerable pain in the throat, high grade fever or the symptoms persist for more than 4-5 days then do consult your physician for a local physical examination of your throat to rule out any bacterial infection. Antibiotic treatment may be needed in such a case.

2. I believe coughing and sneezing does not effect fetus. As of now she is suffering with slight sore throat and dry cough now and then.
The levels are rising normally.
Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The HCG levels are doubling every 48 hours. These levels are rising normally. There is no need to worry.
Just sneezing and mild cough will not harm the baby. She can take cough lozenges or ginger ale for relief. Inhaling steam will also help.
Hope my answer is helpful.
Do accept my answer in case there are no further queries.

Yes. These levels are OK.
Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Yes these levels are good. A slight variation is routine and is not worrisome. As long as the HCG levels are rising steadily there is no need to worry.
