Does Deformation Of Skull Towards The Left Post Surgical Treatment Of Traumatic Brain Injury ?
Question: My Son has went thorugh a TBI (Brain Injury not to severe). Aftert the surgery we are seeing the Bulge on the left hand side of the skull. His whole head is looking deformed. Will it automatically get back or an opertion will be needed later. CSF analysis has been done and it shows normal pressures and no infection
Hi XXXXXXX
You have mentioned that your son had Traumatic Brain Injury and has undergone surgery for the same.
It will be helpful for me if you can tell what was the surgery done.
Usually after any trauma to the head, there will be swelling over the scalp. Such scalp swelling are usually large and take about 5 - 7 days to resolve. If that's the case, then there is no need to worry.
The CSF pressures are normal and this means there is no abnormal increase of pressures inside the brain.
Hope this answers your query.
Please get back if you need any further information
Thanks and Regards

The Surgery was brain surgery were some tissues got destroyed and also to remove CSF fluid. Its been more than a month now that he is in hospital. Since he got hurt on the left side of the head there are certain weakness on his right hand side of the body. Main problem we are facing right now is that there is a bulge or a lump on his left side of the skull and doctors is saying some fluids are getting accumalated there. We are just worried what it could be and how this can be treated.
Also is this something serious when the child grows further as he is just 5 years old now.
Regards
Rohit

Hi XXXXXXX
The swelling is scalp edema and can occur if there is fluid collection underneath the scalp. As of now, you don't have to worry as the CSF pressures are normal. If the swelling increases, you can get a scan done to see if there is any extension of the edema inside.
Sometimes, in brain surgeries, a part of the skull is usually removed on the affected side. Hope this is not the case ?
Your child is very young. The main concern currently will be the brain injury and residual weakness associated with the injury. The swelling will gradually resolve and will not have any long term impact.
Hope this answers your query.
Wish your son a speedy recovery.

Even if its a Scalp Edema and fluids gets filled there, what could be the reason that doctors are doing Lumbar Puncture and Lumbar Drains are being applied.
Can the fluid which is filling this edema or swelling be due to CSF Leaks? If yes than is it dangerous? How can CSF leaks be controlled.
Also how long it will take for son to fully recover from this trauma.

Hi again XXXXXXX
If Lumbar Puncture and Lumbar Drains are being applied, then it means that there is excess CSF collection.
The scalp collection can be related to CSF leak also.
Although not common, it can occur after surgery.
CSF leaks are definitely a concern. There are chances of infection spreading to the brain in such cases.
CT Scan will help to exactly know what the fluid is and where it is coming from.
Also you must ask your doctor what the fluid and it's their responsibility and they should tell you exactly what they are suspecting.
Most CSF leaks usually heal by themselves. However if its persistent, it might need surgical intervention.
Regarding how long it will take for your son to recover from the trauma, injuries to brain if not major, will heal in 2 - 3 months usually.
May I also know the name of the treating doctor and the hospital where your son is being treated at present?
Hope this answers your query.
