Does Eyelids Protect Eyes From High Exposure Light?

default
Posted on Fri, 8 May 2015
Question: Hello

Iam a professional photographer, and what we don't teach in school is medicine; so I have a question related to this:

External speedlight(studio light) , which have a strong light exposure impact will ofcouse make you see stars if you look straight into it when it goes of; but my question is this:

As a photographer I will watch much of this light from the back and not in front of me; and I always closes my eyes when the speedlight goes of;
question 1: will my eyelids protect me from the high exposure light ? because it's impossible to wear sun-glasses as a photographer ( so I though closed eyes could protect me ) ?
question 2: why do I see red light, when I have my eyelids closed and the speedlight goes of ? does light travel through ?
question 3: Getting speedlight directly into your eyes - is this harmful/dangerous for you vision ?

Brief Answer:
photopic phenomenon

Detailed Answer:
My Dear,
Thanks for sending your query to us.
This is what we call as professiinal hazards,eexposure to bright light is almost unavoidable.
closing your lids allows light to travel through the structure of eyelid, mainly muscle and blood.It is passage of light through the blood that you see red.The same phenomenon occures when you see sunlight with fingers closed in front of eye.
This definitely protects your eyes from the harmful effects of lightby closing the lid as a large part of harmful part is absorbed by lid.
That bright light going into the eye has long term effects like cataract and age related macular degeneration ( ARMD)
it is good that you are taking due precautions and please do get back to me in case of any further query in this regard.

thank you for the answear;

Do I understand this right:

Short term exposure in the studio or outside; and by giving your eyes a chance to rest properly will not be harmful for you ?

My Dear,

Even short term exposure if possible has to be curtailed.Other than rest there is a very significant role of anti oxidants and multi vitamin.These dietary additions prevent the long term damages to the body.
