default
Posted on Wed, 24 Jul 2024
Question: Had endoscopy done where a gastric adenomas was found in the duodenum. It was benign and completely removed. I came back a month later and doctor did a colonoscopy which found no adenomas. she also checked the site where she removed the gastric adenoma and said all good. Doctor asked me to come back in 5 years. But I was reading that people with gastric adenomas should come back 6-12 months. Is my gastro giving me bad advice? I brought this up to my doctor and she said 5 years because my adenoma is small, only one and it had what she called

Brief Answer:
Ideally should be repeated after an year

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
As per text it should be repeated after an year whether growth was small or large.
5 years is two long a time.
In 1 or 2 year it should be done(check gastroscopy).

Now why she said 5 years can't be explained because I can't guess what her thoughts were.
Regards.

Detailed Answer:
Hi there,
I can't say that it's bad advice but what I can say is that suggestion is not as per medical text.
Text book approach is repeat scopy after an year.
5 year is too long a time.
You could ask her to get the check scopy done after one year.
Thanks!

sorry miss spelled on the last text.
Just to be clear because you said to check i the growth of adenoma was small or large after 1 year. Let me clarify, she cut out the adenoma, said that it was small and had low grade dysplasia. and because of no history and location. to come back in 5 years.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Actually there is no bookish answer for this thing.
Every doctor would have a different opinion but being a conservative one(don't take risk on my patients).I would do first check scopy after an year and if t turns out to be clear then would suggest for 5 yearly follow up.
As per my view whether it was small or large it was something which is unnatural..So we should check after an year.
Why to take risk even 0.01% when we have all facilities and procedures?
Hope this solves your query,
Regards!
