Does Graves Disease Affect The Ocular Nerves?
Question: If I have Graves disease could it affect my ocular nerves?
Brief Answer:
Hello
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Good day.
Grave's disease is an auto immune disorder where there is antibodies produced against TSH receptor which stimulates thyroid gland to produce excess hormones.
TSH receptor is also present in eyes and there is a 30% chance of involvement of eye in Grave's disease. This is more common in smokers and if you have selenium deficiency. When the eye involvement is severe, it may affect ocular nerve as well. But this is rare.
You should control hyperthyroidism, avoid smoking ( even passive smoking), take selenium supplementation ( 200 microgram daily) and these may help. Avoid hot weather.

Thanks,
I am a smoker, and I do have some strange involuntary eye movements. On my blood work would my TSH be low or high? It was at .245
