Question: I am a stage 2 hypertensive. I take lozartan 100 mg in the morning and amlodipine 10 in the evening. although in all honesty I am not really very religious with my meds especially amlodipine. I have a 42k run by February of 2017. I have not run anything longer than 10k. I have done 10k run about 4 times. My doctor wants to monitor first my bp before she issues me the required medical certificate. my
bp reads from 130/90 on a good day to a bad 140/100 on a bad day. I have more good days than bad. am I at risk of anything?

Hi and thank you for asking!
I read your query and understood your concerns.

First of all you aren't in a great risk under normal circumstances. However if you run a marathon (42 km) you may put your self in great risk if the BP will be uncontrolled.

Secondly you should take medication exactly as was prescribed by your doctors.

Thirdly you should do the following examinations to find out any problems before going to marathon:
- Cardiac echo
- Holter and BP monitoring
- Stress test

Hope this will be of help!
Wish you health!

would your advice be the same if I join a 21k (half marathon) instead? also I am currently 190 pounds at 5 ft 4, down from 220 pounds 9 months ago. I am still obese and want to trim some more. I am 41 years old and will turn a year older by January 2017, how long should I shed off the extra 40 pounds at a rate my heart and bp can handle? are high intensity interval training advisable to me?

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

My advice will be the same even if you join a half marathon race.

The best way to loose weigh isn't excessive training because this may exposure you to unnecessary risk. I would recommend a healthy lifestyle and diet combined with moderate training will help to reduce the weigh by 10% per month.

Hope this will be of help!
