Question: my 40 year old son is breaking out from shrimps eaten today, I gave him Benadryl, is that ok?

Hello,

you haven't mentioned any medical history or other drugs that your son is using, so I guess that he's otherwise healthy. An allergic reaction can be treated with antihistamines (like Benadryl) but there are some things to consider...

If it's a severe allergic reaction (shortness of breath, hypotension, laryngeal edema, etc) then urgent transport to the emergency room is recommended. If it's a mild skin reaction only and your son has no history of serious allergic reactions then an antihistamine should suffice to treat it. Perhaps another one will be required later (after 4-6 hours).

In any case the antihistamine helps.
