Does Intake Of Domperidone Cause Dementia?

Question: My primary care Md. is concerned that my continued use of Domperidone may be causing memory loss or dementia. I've been taking this for for several years. I also take Aricept, ordered by a different Dr. who wants to increase the dose.
Brief Answer:
Domperidone can be stopped if not required
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Dementia is due to neuronal loss with decreased acetylcholine levels.
The therapy is focussed on increasing acetylcholine levels in the brain.
Domperidone can lead to decrease in acetylcholine and should be avoided if possible.
The effect of domperidone on memory is not very clear.
Aricept can be increased in dose if benefit is not satisfactory.
Other drugs like rivastigmine and memantine is also available.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
