Does Intake Of Pantoprazole Help In Curing Barrett's Esophagus?
I have Barrett's esophagus, and have been on the drug Pantoprazole (sp?)
For almost 3 years and I wanted to see if that drug is considered on this danger list?
XXXX
PPI and dementia
Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns
Yesterday there was an article published about a possible link of increased risk of dementia with regular use of PPIs. The PPIs used today are omeprazole, pantoprazole and esomperazole. There seems to be a 44 percent increase in dementia with regular use of a PPI compared to those who do not use PPIs. So your question is your medication on that list and the answer is yes.
So my question to you is this, and one you need to ask your medical provider. Does the benefits of reduced risk of cancer from Barrett's esophagitis out weight the risk of dementia. Both have there consequences which are not good so you and your provider need to decide which way to proceed. We do not have the answer to that question at this time.
I hope I answered your question. Please contact us again if you have any additional questions
