Posted on Fri, 1 Jul 2016
Question: I already take depakote for my bipolar disorder and now my dr. wants to put me on Topamax in addition to my primidone and gabapentin that i take for tremors. She says the topamax will help with bipolar and tremors but when I looked online it looked like they may not be right to use together. I am confused.

Brief Answer:
They can be used together

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.

I see the two reasons for use of Topamax in addition to current medication but I feel primidone should be removed.

The first reason is obviously bipolar diorder as Topamax is also a mod stabilizer and researched well for use in bipolar disorder. Although the data are not robust but I feel when you have another indication for it, it is a worth try.

The second is Migraine. Topamax is highly effective in resistant migraine and that could be another reason for its use.

In addition I feel since Primidone is enzyme inducer it will affect the ability of other medications so removing it from treatment regimen should be considered if possible.

I hope this helps you.
Thanks and regards.
