Does Intake Of Folic Acid And Iron Supplements Help In Increasing Haemoglobin Levels?

I hava a 12 and half year old daughter. She is thin but quit active. Recently she had viral infection and we got a blood count done. We found the haemoglobin level as 10.1. We normally eat non veg food like fish and chicken. I do not undetstand why its low inspite of that. Can you suggest any tonic or iron tab to improve the count. Would folic acid like folvite be helpfull?

Yes you can give folic acid and iron
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
From your description your daughter's hemoglobin is low. Yes she will benefit from iron and folic acid supplements.
Growing kids need more iron and folic acid which may not be met by routine diet ( even chicken).
I suggest
1. Deworm with albendazole. I usually recommend deworming atleast once a year with single tablet of albendazole.
2. I usually prescribe iron syrups like dexorange or hemsi around 5 ml twice daily for such patients in my clinic.
3. Better to add folic acid too. I usually prescribe 5 mg folvite along with iron supplements.
4. Better to get further studies like red blood indices and ferritin, hemoglobin saturation to identify the type of anemia.
Wishing your daughter good health.

Dr Arun
