Posted on Thu, 5 Oct 2017
Question: I had a dental deep cleaning a few days ago and had major pain in some areas that has now subsided but now i have a sore spot under my jaw. Its been there a few days. Do I need antibiotics or another visit to the dentist or no. I don't have a fever but have a little pain on swallowing.

Brief Answer:
Take another 5 days of antibiotic course

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing in.

I would like to ask you whether it was present before cleaning or appeared after the cleaning. If it was before cleaning then take a course of 5 days AmoxiClav 625mg antibiotic twice a day and see if it's resolved.

But if it appeared after cleaning, then it can be due to traumatic bite due to numbness. In this case, you need to wait for few more days to let it heal. In the meantime apply some topical anesthetic gel like Mucogel on it.

If the problem persists despite these, then I'd suggest a re-evaluation by your dentist.

Hope I answered your query, let me know if I can assist you further.
Wishing you good health.

Kind regards
Dr. Neha Sumra

Thank you doctor! The sore spot appeared after cleaning. It is not extremely sore so if it gets worse I will contact my dentist.

Brief Answer:
It can be due to trauma then

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

If it's appeared after cleaning then it's most probably traumatic injury. It might be due to biting in numbness or scaler might have been poked somewhere. Just apply the Mucogel as advised and if it doesn't resolve with in a week then see your dentist again.

Thanks and Regards
