Does Long Term Usage Of PPI's Cause Osteoporosis?

default
Posted on Fri, 17 Apr 2015
Question: Hi. I was diagnosed with esophagitis last August. I think I have it under control now as I do not get nauseated anymore. I do get occasional heartburn and the only thing that helps is omeprazole 20mg. I take it every day. I am borderline osteoporosis. I realize I shouldn't be taking the omeprazole but it is the only thing that helps me. I take ranitidine but that doesnt really he l p with heartburn. My question ---is it ok for me to take the omeprazole? I am 65 years old. Thanks

Brief Answer:
General/dietary care may help; Visit a gastroenterologist once as well

Detailed Answer:
Hello

My name is Dr Muhammad Ali Rauf & i will look into your problem.

I have gone through your query and would try to help you in the best possible way. Yes researches have shown that there is increased risk of osteoporosis in patients with LONG TERM use to PPIs. If you take them for short time then they usually do not cause any problem. You can reduce its use by taking general care and alternative medicine like sucralfate suspension and Syp Gaviscon(combination of Sodium alginate+ calcium carbonate+ sodium bicarbonate) also have remarkable results. I would suggest you to once get an appointment with a Gastroenterologist for this because he is specialized in dealing with these conditions.

> General Care:
Following general care will help you to reduce the intake of PPIs as well.

- take small frequent meals.
- take 30-45mins walk/exercise daily in the evening. It will make you fresh, healthy and is good for digestion.
- Don't lie down immediately after taking meal
- raise head end of your bed slightly(by an inch)
- Eat a diet rich in fiber, especially from fruits and vegetables

> AVOID:
fatty & oily food.
spices
heavy meals at night
carbonated & caffeine drinks
chocolates

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions I will be happy to help if not then don't forget to close the discussion and rate it.
Wishing you good health !!
