Does Persistent Usage Of Birth Control Pills Increase The Risk Of Breast Cancer?
Question: I am 40yrs old, i have been on birth control pills for over 20 yrs, could this increase my risk for breast cancer? Should i stop birth control?
Brief Answer:
minimal increased risk
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
Older birth control pills had more estrogen content and increased risk of breast cancer. Modern pills have much lower estrogen content and balanced with progesterone, hence risk is much lower.
But still, a slight increased risk is there, say 5% more than normal, considering your prolonged usage. But it also reduces risk of ovarian cancer. So ultimately it is your call to continue it or not.
Hope this helps.

Ive been in kind if a scare because i had my annual mammogram in april of this year which they called me back for repeat mammo and ultrasounf of left breast. The radiologist said it was a cyst anf to follow up in 6mos.. Well i went for a second opinion and they also told me cyst follow up in a year. Well i was referred to a breast specialist who repeated the ultrasound and did an MRI. This third ultraound came out with same result a cyst, MRI had a very small enchancement noted <5mm, they couldnt tell what it was, radiologist posssible background enhancement and again for me to follow up in 6mos for repeat MRI. Right now im in a sort of scare and worried attitude and kind of depressed. Im worried, is an ultrasoung accurate, could it mistake a cyst for cancer? What do you recommend?
Brief Answer:
most likely benign
Detailed Answer:
Since both the ultrasound and MRI are suggestive of benign lesion/cyst there is no reason to worry. Follow up imaging should be fine.
